A collection of forty West Gallery psalms, hymns and anthems from the Colby Manuscripts, collected and used by William Shepherd in the Isle of Man in the early decades of the 19th Century, with 32 added Manx texts. West Gallery music was popular in churches throughout Britain in the 18 th and 19 th centuries, before church organs were introduced, and it was usually local bands and singers that provided performed this music for the regular church services. The anthems were often written by local composers and are invariably full of charm and unusual musical features.
