This year Shennaghys Jiu is delighted to welcome new and familiar faces back to the Island. The festival takes place in and around Ramsey from Friday 25th through to Monday 28th March, and with the bonus of a bank holiday either side of the weekend, extra events to come and get involved in! Now in its 19th year, Shennaghys Jiu festival is keen to bring music to as many children as possible. As well as providing concerts there are lots of opportunities to get involved and playing and dancing and meet the visiting artists – we’re proud to have been the start of many close friendships over the years!
On Friday afternoon our visiting Scottish musicians will run workshops for melody instrument and guitar playing, learning by ear – all ages welcome. On Friday evening is the popular family concert and ceilidh from 7.30pm.
On Saturday there’s plenty of opportunities to get involved – Manx music workshop at 11 and then food and a session, Scottish dancing at 3pm. Following the success of last year’s Saturday night event in Andreas, Shennaghys Jiu is returning to Andreas hall this year for a concert and ceilidh featuring all visiting musicians and dancers. Buses will leave from Ramsey (details at the website) – free entry and bring your own drinks!
On Sunday there are free Manx and then Irish dance workshops from our visiting group, followed later in the by a concert and ceilidh at the Masonic Hall in Ramsey – free entry!
After all that it’s time for a gentle session on Monday lunchtime, all musicians welcome. Then on Monday evening the usual Bands night – with a twist!
* Monday night at Shennaghys Jiu is always about bands, and in particular, showcasing talent from the Isle of Man. This year, we want to provide an opportunity for budding new traditional music ideas and performers to get behind the microphone. As well as music from Adam Melvin, The Mollag Band, Matt Kelly amongst others, two 40-minute ‘open-mic’ slots are programmed. We would welcome soloists and groups (of up to 5) of any age to come and show us your stuff! Slots will be allocated on the night on a first-come, first-serve basis, or email russ.cowin@gmail.com for more info.
