manx celtic music and dance

Celebration & Contemplation is a book of Manx melodies arranged for organ by various composers and produced by Culture Vannin. Two of the pieces by Frank Woolley have extra versions for manual organ and voices which are available to download here:

Prelude - Manx Fishermen's Evening Hymn

One of the most widely recognised hymns in the Isle of Man, ‘Manx Fishermen’s Evening Hymn’ or ‘Peel Castle’ was originally adapted from an old air called ‘Eaisht oo as Clashtyn’ (Listen and Hear) by WH Gill in the 1890s. This prelude by Frank Woolley presents a creative and original interpretation of the well-loved hymn tune.

Prelude - Rushen Funeral Hymn manuals

The ‘Kirk Christ Rushen Funeral Hymn’ was said to have been collected by composer Haydn Wood from the singing of parish clerk, Evan Qualtrough, and it was reproduced in The Journal of the Manx Museum of 1936 with Manx Gaelic lyrics. In this arrangement, the simple melody is expanded upon to create a beautiful and powerful reverie.
